Remove These 6 Stumbling Blocks to Your Success – Ep 121

If you looking to stop self-sabotage and start doing big things in the world, then here are six stumbling blocks to your success and how to remove them.

We all lean toward some sort of self-limiting beliefs, even when we’re successful. Our brains are wired to believe a negative outcome over a positive one, known as the negativity bias or negativity effect. We are all full kinetic or potential energy, which is a lot like a bottled carbonated beverage.

When we feel pressured, it’s like someone is shaking the bottle. If we open the cap quickly, it’s going to be a disaster, but if we open the cap slowly it can be opened without issue.

When we focus on our fears, we exacerbate the problem and make it worse, just like shaking the carbonated beverage. The more you focus on the negative, the more kinetic energy there is in the bottle.

So, how can you re-frame and channel that energy into the task at hand?

Here are six stumbling blocks to your success and how to remove them.

Stumbling Block #1: Fear of being criticized

Often the people we worry will criticize us are peers or loved ones, but these are not the people we help.

Reframe: Attract people who are your tribe and repel those who are not. Tell yourself, “I am not everyone’s cup of tea, but I am committed to helping these specific people.”

Practical Step: Define your audience more specifically and how you can help them. Talk with them and get feedback.

Stumbling Block #2: Fear of being overwhelmed

Sometimes we fear that the thing that we want to do will overwhelm us and so we just stop.

Reframe: When you feel overwhelmed it means you’re  learning something new. Tell yourself, “I am feeling overwhelmed, which means I’m learning something new.”

Practical Step: Break everything down into steps in order to make the task feel more doable. Hire someone or enlist a partner to help you with the parts that may take too much time or aren’t interesting to you.

Stumbling Block #3: Fear of change

Change is always uncomfortable at first and we might feel like it is much easier to just stay where we are. As the old saying goes, “If it’s not broken, don’t fix it.” However, this old adage doesn’t take into account that this approach means you will never reach goals that are outside of your comfort zone.

Reframe: Being a little or even a lot uncomfortable means that you are on the right track.

Practical Step: Create a clear vision of the change that you want to make in the world that helps you to invite other people into your world.

Stumbling Block #4: Fear of the impact on loved ones

When you are planning something big, it may take up a lot of your time. You might feel that you can’t do it because you have small children, or an aging parent, or any number of other responsibilities to your family and don’t have the time to give.

Reframe: My dream being realized will have a positive impact on my family.

Practical Step: Think of ways to enlist your family in your dream or hire others to help you. If your family members are negative about your dream, you may have to refrain from sharing much with them at first. Often they are just trying to protect you from failure and it’s their own limiting beliefs driving that negativity. Have cutoffs where you commit to working and commit to family time, but keep those separate.

Stumbling Block #5: The feeling of being stuck

Sometimes things take longer than we hope, especially when we’re up against an obstacle. Often when we are feeling stuck, we think that it will never change and we will be stuck forever.

Reframe: I am in a season that has an end. There is something that I need to learn before I can move on. There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Practical Step: Always be learning. Look for courses, books, podcasts and other materials to expand your horizon. Learning something new helps to expand your horizons, but can also help you to see things in a different way and gain a different perspective. Always be learning and always stay curious.

Stumbling Block #6: Imposter syndrome

It is so easy to feel like you are an imposter. The best way to overcome this is to keep taking action. It’s also important to never teach something you haven’t done yourself.

Reframe: I am committed to staying one step ahead of my customers and will always be learning from them.

Practical Step: Teach your students to do what you have done. Make mistakes and own your mistakes. Always be taking risks and making mistakes so your students don’t have to. You don’t have to know everything and that’s okay, but have the humility be transparent because that makes you real.
